Lago di Garda (Garda Lake)

This lake, just 15 minutes by train to the west of Verona, is breathtaking. It stretches to the north, all the way to the Alps. The water is very clean, and surprisingly warm. Danielle joined us on our field trip to the lake, a perfect day with temperatures in the high 80s. We didn't take the photo below, but thought it would give you a good visual of how beautiful it is.

You can still see the Medieval influences of Verona, such as this castle on the eastern shore. This would make a nice little summer cottage.

Here's Steve thinking he can drive this boat...

...but should probably stick to one of these!

Here's Becky thinking about buying a wheel of cheese that weighs more than she does. This market along the shoreline had some of the best samples of food you could ever taste.

This amount of Reggiano parmigiano would probably require a second mortgage in the U.S., the size of a small slice usually costs $15 at home. After about 6 samples, the guy said, "Are you going to buy some or not!". Okay, that's not true, but the samples we did have sure were good!

These supporting walls are beside a walking and bike path that stretches for miles along the eastern side of the lake, covered in gorgeous vines and flowers.

The shoreline is dotted with many natural and man-made beaches providing areas to relax, soak up the sun and plunge into the lake. We are sure that it's packed in the summer, it was pretty busy for the month of May.

It turned out that the people that we met in Sorrento that suggested we visit Lago di Garda were right, it should not be missed. One day was just not enough here, the lake is huge and we explored about one quarter of it.

The most famous of the lakes is Como, which is to the west of Garda headed towards Milan. We definitely plan to make it back here someday, we just need to figure out who owns that cottage/castle so we can stay with them!
